Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam

If you have completed a certified nursing assistant course in West Virginia, you must apply for state’s certification exam. This exam consists of a written test and skills evaluation test.

Written test comprises 70 multiple choice questions, for which 2 hours are provided (to complete them). Theoretical nursing knowledge is evaluated in this test.

One can give this test in oral format as well, for which one will require to request and specify it in the examination application form.

This test consists of two parts: solving 60 multiple choice questions and solving 10 multiple choice questions related to commonly used nursing-specific word-recognition.

Skills test requires candidates to carry out any 5 skills, which must be completed within 25 minutes. At the start of this test, an evaluator randomly chooses any 5 skills and assigns them to the candidates, eventually supervising and rating their performance in each skill.

It is important to do well in each skill and if you are not able to do so, you will fail and will require retaking this test next time.

You must excel in both the parts of this exam for CNA license acquisition.

Succeeding in this exam will result in your registration in West Virginia Nursing Assistant Registry, granting you freedom to work anywhere as a certified nurse aide in any hospital, clinic, care center, rehabilitation center or in any nursing facility in that state.

If you do not pass in this exam in written or skills test in your first or second attempt, you will need to reappear that section only.

Avoid failing in this exam in your third try, as this will require you to retake the entire course along with the state’s CNA certification exam.

CNA license must be renewed, as the validity of it expires after every two years. Thus ensuring this thing will permit your employment continuation in that state.

To qualify for renewal, you must have paid work experience of at least 8 hours as a CNA/RNA, carrying out nursing responsibilities in any licensed facility over the past 24 months in West Virginia.

West Virginia CNA Reciprocity

Candidates looking forward to shift to this state for work will need to achieve certification in that state through reciprocity or to take CNA courses (with certification exam).

For reciprocity, collect the reciprocity form from West Virginia Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification site.

After filling the form, submit it to them along with proving the following points:

  • Active certificate from the state where he/she currently works
  • Must be in good standing with that state
  • Clean criminal background

They will verify it and subsequently you will come to know about your transfer status.

If you are successful in meeting all the requirements, you will be honored with a CNA license in West Virginia and if not, retaking CNA course with certification exam will be required.

CNA Salary in West Virginia

Over the years, demand for CNAs has increased slowly and salary is no exception.

Typically, the average annual salary and average hourly wage of a certified nurse aide are around $19,000-$21,000 and $9.50-$11 respectively.

Salary does increase with experience and additional certifications. Even the West Virginia State expects to see a rise of 14% in CNA position over the next few years.

Although this is lesser than the national average, opportunities will increase steadily.

Thus pursuing CNA education from future point of view will be good as opportunities are bound to rise steadily in West Virginia.
