Our Story
Why We Built Top Nurse
Top Nurse started in 2018 with a simple frustration. Every year, hundreds of thousands of aspiring nurse aides prepare for the CNA exam — and every year, most of them turn to the same dusty, free online quizzes: outdated question banks that ignore the current test plan, score you without ever explaining an answer, and treat the official NNAAP domains as an afterthought. Capable students were failing, and it was not their effort that was the problem — it was the material.
So we built the resource we wished existed: 52 free practice tests with 1,900+ NNAAP-style questions mapped to the official exam blueprint, from basic nursing skills and infection control to legal and ethical behavior. James Markham
Founder & Lead CNA Educator
James spent years training and mentoring nurse aides — in the classroom, in clinical settings, and one-on-one with students retaking the exam. He kept seeing the same pattern: bright, hard-working candidates undone by outdated practice material that bore little resemblance to the actual NNAAP test.
In 2018 he assembled a small team of nursing educators and built Top Nurse around three non-negotiables: every question mapped to the official blueprint, every answer paired with a real explanation, and every practice test free to anyone willing to study. The question bank that exists today — 52 tests and 1,900+ questions — grew out of that standard.
Today James leads content strategy, still personally reviews new question sets before they ship, and reads every piece of student feedback that lands in our inbox.
