Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam

The day, on which you complete a state-approved training program, you become eligible to sit for Virginia state certification exam (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam).

You can apply for this exam thrice within the specified time (2-year validity period).

This exam is split into two parts: written/oral test and clinical skills evaluation test. In written test, maximum of two hours is provided to complete 70 multiple choice questions.

These questions are based on nursing concepts (theory). Undertaking this test in oral format requires you to specify it in the examination application form.

Oral test comprises two parts: first part consists of 60 multiple choice questions and the second one consists of 10 multiple choice questions (meant to judge the ability to recognize commonly used English nurse aide words).

Earphones are provided, through which candidates listen to the questions (recorded in the cassette) and accordingly answer them.

Either questions are repeated twice or thrice during this test. You must pass in both these tests to eventually pass in this exam.

Ensuring this condition will endow you with a CNA license in Virginia, giving you the authority to work as a Certified Nurse Aide in any health care sector in that state.

Failing in this exam either in written or in skills section will need you to retake that section only.

Your future will affect badly if you fail in this exam in your third try, as this will necessitate you to complete a course and certification exam in Virginia all over again.

Renewal of a CNA license is needed before it expires. This must be done after every 2 years.

For this, you must have worked for some hours as a CNA, executing nursing activities in any licensed facility over that period in Virginia. Doing this will ensure employment extension in that state.

Virginia CNA Reciprocity

For an out-of-state candidate willing to transfer to Virginia for work, endorsement application form must be collected from Virginia Board of Nursing.

Following requirements must be satisfied for transfer approval:

  • Active certificate from the state where he/she is currently under employment
  • Good standing status with that state
  • Must have completed a state-approved training that satisfies OBRA regulations
  • Must have passed (home) state CNA certification exam
  • Clean criminal history

As soon as you submit the required documents, they are verified within few days, after which notification is made stating the status of your endorsement. Meeting the specified requirements guarantees CNA license attainment in the State of Virginia.

CNA Salary in Virginia

Not only experienced CNAs are paid good salary but also the entry-level ones. Typically, they make anywhere around $21,000-$23,000 on an average yearly.

Estimation claims to see a rise of 31% in CNA jobs over the next few years in Virginia, which is way beyond as compared to that in case of other states.

Thus with the State of Virginia holding so much scope for CNAs currently as well as in future, it will be excellent for the aspirants to complete their CNA training in Virginia, thereby accomplishing their aim of becoming a recognized Certified Nurse Aide.
