Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam
Passing certification exam will be required in any case, if you are willing to become a certified nursing assistant in the state. One can apply for this exam after completing his/her CNA course in state.
This exam includes and focuses on two aspects:
- Written test – Generally meant to test applicant’s conceptual nursing knowledge, it includes solving 50-70 multiple choice questions
- Clinical skills evaluation test – A proctor randomly selects and assigns any five skills (from a set of 25 skills) to an applicant, where his/her performance is analyzed.
It is very important for the applicants to excel in both these tests, as performances in both these tests will affect their results.
Once you pass this exam, you will get a license in Minnesota by state’s Nursing Assistant Registry; thereby giving you the liberty to work anywhere as a nurse aide in any long-term care facility, hospital, clinic, nursing home, rehabilitation center, etc.
This exam can be taken thrice, but make sure you do not fail in third attempt, as this will lead you towards retaking the course and then the certification exam in the state.
Renewing the license is required to be done after every two years, to continue working as a nurse aide in that state.
To renew a license, an applicant will be required to prove his/her employment status, stating that he/she has worked for at least 8 hours as a nurse aide in the State of Minnesota, indulged in performing nursing related duties over the last 2 years.
In addition to this, his/her certificate (license) must be in good standing with state’s Nursing Assistant Registry.
Minnesota CNA Reciprocity
An out-of-state candidate, willing to shift to the State of Minnesota will be required to contact Nursing Assistant Registry of the state for transfer/interstate endorsement form.
This will require him/her to prove the following points:
- Valid CNA certificate (not lapsed/expired) from the state where he/she currently works
- Good standing position with that state
- Good reputation with paid work experience as a CNA for at least 8 hours, performing nursing-associated duties over the last 2 years in that state
- Valid official social security card
- Clean criminal history
Application form along with required documents will be verified, after which the candidate will be notified about whether he/she is eligible for the transfer or not.
If you excel in meeting all the above specified requirements, you will be entitled as a Minnesota CNA, registered under the Nursing Assistant Registry.
