Like most states the CNA certification in Louisiana requires certain eligibility criteria. You must have a high school diploma or equivalent degree and must have completed the age of 18 years. You must have no felony charges against you and a background check is carried out to confirm the same. You must be in good health and must take a medical test to verify that you don’t have tuberculosis or any other infectious disease.

The certification exam fee is around $120.

There are some local hospitals that offer free training if you agree to work for them after obtaining license, but you must read the agreement carefully before signing it because some employers pay very low salary to cover up the cost of training. Some community colleges in Louisiana also offer free training as and when directed by the state nursing board; you have to contact the board to find out such colleges.

Nurse aide programs in Louisiana

The state nurse aide certification authority has made it obligatory that recognized CNA classes in Louisiana should provide training for at least 100 hours which are equally divided into classroom study and practical training. The classroom study is conducted by experts from the field and apart from the usual subjects like anatomy, communication skills, resident rights etc. it also involves debates, discussions and video conferencing for a broader understanding of the subjects. The practical training is conducted under the supervision of a registered nurse to ensure quality training.

After completion of training you can take the certification test which consists of two parts; the written part has multiple choice questions and you must get 75% of the answers right. For the clinical part, the examiner will pick five skills out of all the skills you have learnt and you have to perform all of them to the satisfaction of the examiner; the examiner may ignore minor mistakes while grading you if you bring it to his/ her notice.

On passing the exam you will be issued a license which will be up for renewal every two years if you have served as a nurse for at least eight hours in those two years and you have a proof of it. Reciprocity clause is active in Louisiana and out of state nurse aides can easily transfer the license of they have a clean background with the nurse registry of that state.
