Training for Certified Nursing Assistant in Wisconsin

As one has to have a formal training of any field which one wants to enter, entering the nursing field too demands a comprehensive training of techniques and practices of nursing. In the state of Wisconsin, CNA is the very first step of becoming a nursing professional.

Certified nursing assistants are popularly known as ‘nurse aides’ who are regulated by Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). They work at various hospitals, clinical settings, nursing homes, long-term care centers, mental care centers, convalescent homes, etc. As their name suggests, nurse aides serve to aid the patients and also assist the senior registered nurses (RNs).

They provide the patients with very basic health care due to which the senior nursing staff and doctors can focus upon the major health issues of the patients. For training the students for becoming the certified nurse aides; many high schools, community colleges, technical vocational schools, long-term care centers, medical institutions, etc., offer formal state approved course programs.

Remaining hours of course are given for the classroom learning session. They learn and understand the theoretical basis of the nursing practice in technical classes in order to implement it during the clinical practice.

CNA Exam in Wisconsin

When the students successfully accomplish the course, they have to appear and pass the state approved exam for certification as a nursing assistant. The state of Wisconsin contracts with Pearson Vue for the regulation and administration of the exam. It follows the pattern set by the NNAAP (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program). The first paper is a written test based upon the technical knowledge of the students and asks them to solve 70 multiple choice questions from the theory. The second one is a clinical skills test that asks the students to perform any 5 randomly chosen manual skills within the given time. The students are constantly under the strict supervision of the nursing examiners for the evaluation of their technical talent and clinical protocols competency. They are supposed to pass separately in both the tests in order to pass the exam.
Passing in the state CNA exam signifies that the candidates possess the desired nursing talent and skills required to start and continue the nursing practice as their long-term career. They then become eligible to obtain the certificate and the license for the same through state’s nursing authority. Their names get listed on the nurse aide registry along with their updated professional working information.
