The certified nursing assistants readily get jobs at various health care and medical settings, nursing facilities, clinics, long-term care settings, rehabilitation centers, convalescent homes, etc. The state certification as a nurse aide is essential to work at any of these settings professionally. This certification is obtained only after accomplishing the formal state approved training classes for the certified nursing assistants.

The state approved training program for certified nurse aides is typically comprised of total 80 hours. Out of these 80 hours, first 40 hours are allotted to the classroom based learning and next 40 hours are allotted to the supervised clinical training. In the in-class learning session, the students get to learn and understand all the theoretical basics of the nursing practice. This session covers all the essential technical aspects of nursing and is conducted by the qualified course instructors. They teach the students through various lectures, audio-visual interactive sessions, group discussions, etc.

After completion of the classroom instruction, the students have to undergo a 40 hours clinical training session. This is a completely supervised hands-on training conducted at a nearby health care setting like a long-term care center or a nursing home. As the training takes place at a professional facility, the students get the benefit of guidance from the instructors as well as the nursing professionals at the respective setting. They get the chance to work one-on-one with the patients and at the same time; are supervised by the senior registered nurses. The students get to learn and acquire all the essential tasks of a CNA here along with the manual skills needed to be performed during the professional practice.

CNA Exam

Upon successful completion of the training program of 80 hours, the students are all set to appear for the CNA examination. The state of South Carolina follows the pattern set by NNAAP (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program) for the examination. This exam is approved by the state and is administered by the company named Pearson Vue. It is taken in 2 parts – a written technical test and a clinical skills competency test. The written test is based on the theory portion covered in the classroom instruction; while the clinical skills test is based on the skills portion covered in the hands-on training. The students have to solve 70 multiple choice questions in the written test and perform any 5 randomly given manual tasks in the skills test. They are tested here for their competency level. The nursing examiners constantly supervise and evaluate them based upon the competency shown by them. It is mandatory to pass in both the tests separately.
Those who successfully pass in the exam obtain the CNA certification and license soon. Thus, they can continue their nursing practice at any professional setting across the state.

In short, CNA training in South Carolina is shorter and inexpensive; and thus, is a good option to go for.
