Training for Certified Nursing Assistant in Oklahoma

Training for Certified Nursing Assistant in Oklahoma

Unlike other states of the country, Oklahoma has 6 different types of certified nursing aides – long-term care aide, home health aide, developmentally disabled direct care aide, residential care aide, day care aide for adults and certified aide for medication. However, all these CNAs are regulated and certified by the same entity. It is the Oklahoma state Department of Health that looks after their certification and other relevant aspects. The students who wish to pursue a long-term career in nursing or in general, health care field should definitely have to climb the first step of becoming a certified nurse aide.

Overview of CNA Training in Oklahoma

Many schools, community colleges, technical vocational academies, independent programs, medical institutions, nursing homes, long-term care centers offer state approved CNA programs. A typical Oklahoma training program consists of 2 sections – a classroom instruction and clinical skills portion. Both collectively should contribute to the total duration of minimum 75 hours. This duration may extend to 100 hours. In first session, the classroom instruction is scheduled. There are organized lectures, audio-visual interactive sessions, group discussions, etc., conducted by the qualified course instructors. They teach the students all the necessary theoretical aspects of nursing and techniques.

At times, there are demonstrations too for the thorough comprehension of the topics. The students are provided with the course material by the facility offering the program. They also get some practice written tests for the preparation towards passing the state exam ahead. The next session after classroom instruction is clinical practice session. It involves hands-on practice of the essential manual skills to be performed daily by the certified nurse aides. The students get to acquire and develop the tasks while practicing for the same.

CNA Exam in Oklahoma

Once the students successfully complete the entire training program, they become eligible to take the state approved written and skills exam for CNA. The exam is administered collectively by the Oklahoma state and D & S Diversified Technologies. It has 2 parts, one of which is a written test based upon the theoretical syllabus. The students have to solve 72 multiple choice questions in this test and score up to or above 70%. The second part of the exam involves a clinical skills test where the students are tested for their competency in skills and protocols. They have to perform any 5 skills that are chosen randomly from a list. They are constantly under the strict supervision of their course instructors as well as the nursing examiners. They are evaluated for their competency level in both technical knowledge and practical skills. Good competency level signifies that the candidates possess the desired talent and skill sets for getting certified as nurse aides.
Once the students pass in the state exam for certified nursing assistant, the Oklahoma state board of nursing awards them the certificate. This enables them to get listed on the state’s nurse aide registry along with their addresses and updated working status. Those who are certified can easily get the license by going through a legal procedure. The certification and licensure for certified nursing aides allow them to continue their nursing practice anywhere across the state.
In short, Oklahoma state offers greater opportunities for the certified nurse aides as compared to other states. This is because the state has various specified positions for certified nurse aides at specific health care settings. This ensures that it is always a good option for any young graduate to enroll in an approved Oklahoma CNA training, if interested.
