Certified Nursing Assistant Training in Georgia

Certified Nursing Assistant Training in Georgia

In the tough economic times of the country and recession period faced by most of the industries, the health care and medical industries are the only ones which are in need of working professionals. These 2 fields would never fall short of demand for employees, as there is increase in population and increase in medical care needs. Taking this into consideration, the state of Georgia offers the training programs for certified nursing assistants through various high schools, vocational technical schools, community colleges, medical institutions, health care facilities, etc. The certification and other relevant aspects about CNA are supervised and regulated by the Department of Community health (DCH) in alliance with Georgia Medical Care Foundation (GMCF). Both these organizations work together to manage the entire process.

CNA Requirements

There are certain requirements for becoming a certified nursing assistant. They include –

  • Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent GED (general educational development) test passing proof
  • Completion of CNA program , which consists of at least 85 hours of training (technical and clinical)
  • Registration and passing in the state competency evaluation exam for certified nursing assistant
  • Renewal of the certification every 2 years by producing a proof of being an active nursing professional in past 2 years

Approved CNA Training

If one is still in a high school and needs to enroll in a formal training for becoming a nursing assistant, then there is an option of searching for approved CNA courses which also announce financial assistance for the cost of classes. The financial aid is given through scholarship or sponsorship programs for the worthy students. The state approved training programs for certified nursing aide are strictly composed of total 85 hours of course work and 24 hours of clinical practice at a nursing home or other living care facility. Those 85 hours should include classroom session as well as practical session. The classroom session involves in-class lectures on theory topics which deliver the technical knowledge to the students. The topics covered in this session are basic science, basic patient care, human body mechanics, anatomy and physiology, basic nutrition, personal care and hygiene, infection control, health education, population education, etc. The course material is also made available by the respective facility offering the classes.
The practical session covers clinical practices that a CNA must perform during the duty period. These tasks involve patient care, feeding and giving medication, bathing and grooming, changing bed linens, bed making, providing with bed pan, preparation of simple dressing, maintaining healthy environment, keeping health records in charts, reporting all the health updates to the doctors and obtaining vital signs. These tasks need a high degree of skill, accurate performance, capacity to perform the same tasks again and again, precise written communication in English and interpersonal communication skills. The students get to learn and develop all the nursing talent and skills through such training programs. One of the advantages of approved training courses is that the course content, time duration of course and exam pattern are up to the standards set by the state authorities. This ensures passing successfully in the state exam and getting the certificate and license for the same.

CNA Exam

The state of Georgia uses NNAAP (national nurse aide assessment program) exam for assessment of certified nursing assistants. Pearson VUE is the company which administers the aspects regarding exam. The exam is nothing but the competency evaluation of the students. The competency in both ways, technical as well as practical is tested through the exam. There are 2 papers in the exam out of which the first paper is theory based and asks to solve 70 multiple choice questions on the syllabus covered in the in-class session. The second paper is practical syllabus based which asks the students to show their competency in performing randomly chosen 5 clinical tasks in the given time period. The tasks are continuously supervised and examined by the course instructors and senior registered nurses.

The students get the result of this exam within a month and then, they can get CNA certificate. Now they are called ‘certified’ and are registered on the nurse aide registry of the state. This registry keeps a database updated with the personal information and professional working status of the nursing professionals. This is helpful for the employers who can get the information of their prospective employees.
