In this state, the duration of the certified nursing assistant training programs may vary due to certain factors, but usually they last from 4-6 weeks to a semester. The basic federal minimum hour requirement is of 75 hours of the classes. If the program is state approved, it must be composed of 100 hours.

Curriculum and Exam for CNA

The curriculum content includes the technical or theoretical as well as practical skill parts. Hence, the course schedule is divided into 2 parts. One part involves in-class sessions for the completion of theory part; while the other part involves practical sessions for the completion of clinical skill practice. Both the sessions are allotted specific time periods and the students are mandated to attend both of them. The technical in-class session covers topics like medical terminologies, basic science, physiology and anatomy, human body mechanics, basic nutrition, basic patient care and safety, health and population education, personal hygiene, patients’ rights, etc. In practical session, the students perform clinical skills such as maintaining healthy and clean environment, providing with basic care to the patients, feeding and providing with medication, bathing and grooming, bed making, providing with bed pan, preparing simple dressing, obtaining vital signs, keeping health charts of the patients and reporting the health updates to doctors. This practicing gives them the skills and confidence that they need during the actual job as certified nursing aides. Here they also learn and develop the skills of interpersonal communication and precise English written communication.
Once the course work is accomplished, the students are supposed to show their competency through the state approved CNA exam. The exam comprises of 2 parts, of which the first part is a written or an oral exam. The format for this part of exam may vary. The second part of exam is a skills test that asks the students to perform any random clinical skills under the supervision of trained nurses. The students are evaluated on the basis of both these tests and the evaluation decides whether they are eligible to perform the tasks of a certified nursing aide or not.

Certification and Licensure

Passing successfully in the state approved exam leads the candidates to obtain the certificate of CNA and after that, the licensure for the same. After certification, the names of the students get listed on the state’s nurse aide registry. It updates the personal as well as the professional working status of all the prospective candidates. As the certificate and the license expire after regular intervals of time, the candidates must be aware about their expiry date and must renew them at the proper time. Usually, this time interval is of 2 years and demands a specific renewal fees. Those who are already working as professional nursing assistants in other states and want to move to Connecticut can transfer the previous state’s credentials as well. Thus, they get their certificate and license transferred to this state . This comes under the Connecticut reciprocity.
One should go for an accredited CNA program. All the approved courses are beneficial from the exam and employment point of view. Once you become a certified nursing aide, there is a wide array of employment opportunities in this field.
