Arizona Nurse Aide Training

Arizona Nurse Aide Training

As the population is increasing, the need for health care centers and health care professionals is also increasing. There is constant demand for nursing professionals in the health care arena and this demand calls for more and more nursing assistants to be ready to enter the field. CNA training classes are the preliminary entities that serve to prepare such candidates who are qualified and talented in nursing, and are eligible to work professionally as nursing aides. In Arizona, there are many high schools, vocational schools, community colleges, nursing homes, hospitals, medical schools, health care centers, convalescent homes and long-term care centers which do offer training classes. Even certain independent companies also offer the classes. These training programs are in accordance with the Omnibus Funds Reconciliation Act (1987). The Arizona state mandates the students to pass the self approved exam. This exam is for the certification of nursing assistants and licensure for the same. The certification requirements are to accomplish the certified nursing aide training program from a recognized facility in the state of Arizona and pass the exam successfully.

The educational qualification requirements by the Arizona nursing training courses are a little different from those of the other states. This state board does not mandate the students to be high school graduates or diploma holders or GED (general educational development) test certified; but it allows the students to get enrolled in the certified nursing assistant classes even when they are pursuing their high school education. This enables the students who are in high schools to get an approach with the nursing education. They can start with their future endeavors right from their schooling time. However, the employers in nursing or health care industry generally seek for those candidates who have completed 18 years of their age.

An Overview of CNA Programs in Arizona

The entire course program consists of a 120 hour course work. Out of these 120 hours, 80 hours are comprised of classroom sessions and remaining 40 hours have been allotted for the practical sessions. The syllabus of all the theoretical concepts are covered during the classroom sessions and the clinical sessions cover the hands-on practice of the students. Students practice clinical tasks in actual clinical environment and under the supervision of trained senior nursing instructors. This hands-on practice renders them the confidence of performing the daily tasks of CNAs and that too, skillfully. In the technical classroom course work, the students learn and study the theoretical crux of nursing; while the hands-on practice teaches them to acquire and develop new skills every day.

The certified nursing aide programs in Arizona tend to provide the students with the course material, uniforms, snickers, scrubs, watch, liability insurance, state certification payment, drug screen charge, and background check fees. These facilities may differ from school to school.

Content of the Syllabus in Arizona

  • Basic science
  • Human body mechanics
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Basic patient care and safety
  • Personal and patient hygiene
  • Patient’s rights
  • Infection control

Apart from these topics, the students are trained in usual tasks such as feeding and bathing patients, providing medication, safe transfer and repositioning, bed making, keeping health records, maintaining health updates of patients, recognizing vital signs, etc.

The Arizona State Board’s Exam for CNA

After accomplishing the classes for certified nursing assistants, one has to appear for the state board’s exam which includes 2 types of tests. The technical paper tests the technical knowledge of candidates through multiple choice questions; while the second paper tests the practical talent of candidates. They are asked to perform any 5 random clinical tasks under the supervision of their course instructors and senior supervisors. They keep watch on each and every job of the students so as to evaluate them accurately. This is why the exam is called as competency evaluation exam. The students have to prove their competency here and show that they are now eligible to work as professionals.

One has to pass the exam for nursing assistant successfully in order to get the certificate. After being certified, one becomes eligible to apply for the licensure. The CNA license requirements mainly include background and medical check proofs. After obtaining the license, the candidate’s name gets registered on the Arizona state’s nurse aide registry, but for only a limited validity period. Like most other states, the validity period in Arizona is also of 2 years after which the certification and license must be renewed. The renewal notice and application form are sent by the Arizona nursing authority before 3 months of the date of expiry. Failing to renew or to reactivate it, the license is declared as ‘deactivated’ or ‘expired’.

However, for sustaining the active status of the CNA license, it is mandatory for the respective candidate to continue professional nursing practice for a minimum of 160 hours within the validity period of 2 years. Failing to produce the proof of the same can create complications in getting recertification and employment.

In the state of Arizona, the training requirements are somewhat different than other states. Many facilities provide with certified nursing aides programs and the students have to meet all the pre-requisites for becoming the state approved professional CNAs.
