Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam

After you complete a CNA course in Washington, you can apply for state certification exam thrice within 24 months from the course completion date.

This exam includes 2 sections: a written test section and clinical skills evaluation test section. Written test consists of 70 multiple choice questions, which must be completed within 2 hours.

These questions generally focus on evaluating conceptual nursing understanding. Though this test can be taken orally, it must be mentioned in the examination application form. Cassette (including questions), cassette player, and earphones are provided for this test.

Split between two parts, the first part of oral test requires you to solve 60 multiple choice questions, while the second part focuses on testing the word-recognition skills (based on universally used nursing-related English words), which includes 10 multiple choice questions.

During the latter part, repetition of each word is made twice, while questions are repeated once during the former part.

Consequently, candidates answer the questions in the answer booklet after listening to them.

Skills test requires candidates to perform any 5 skills, meant to evaluate their clinical hands-on skills.

A proctor arbitrarily selects and assigns any 5 skills, out of which one is hand washing (will be there for sure), and evaluates their performance.

Make sure you perform well in each CNA skill task, as failure in even a single skill will lead to complete failure and retaking that exam will be required.

If you excel in both, written test as well as in skills test, you will be listed on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry, thereby achieving a CNA license.

If you fail in written test or skills test in first/second try, you will need to retest that part only. Failure in the third attempt will result in retaking the course with state certification exam.

Generally, a candidate is required to renew his/her CNA certificate after every 24 months. This is applicable in almost all states.

In order to renew your license, you will need to submit documents related to your employment status, claiming that you have worked for at least 8 hours as a certified nurse aide, performing nursing duties in any facility over that period in Washington.

Renewing a license will allow you to continue your employment in that state.

Washington CNA Reciprocity

Applying for a certification through reciprocity will require you to collect endorsement application from Department of Health site.

Following points must be proved to transfer to Washington:

  • Valid license (not lapsed/expired) from home state
  • Good reputation in the state
  • Must have completed/passed an approved course and state certification exam
  • Clean criminal record

Submit the application form with the required documents (if asked). CNA Certification Verification will be done and you will be notified about your transfer status.

Once you satisfy all the criteria, you will get a license to work as a Certified Nurse Aide in Washington.

CNA Salary in Washington

Demand for CNAs seems good. Salary made by a Certified Nurse Aide in the state varies between $24,000 and $26,000 annually.

Around 22% growth is expected in CNA position in the State, which is great from future perspective.

Thus this position in health care sector being so demanding, pursuing nurse aide education will be beneficial for aspirants, making it easier for them to make a rewarding and long-lasting career.
