Aspirants willing to become a Certified Nursing Assistant in Oregon will be required to pursue OSBN (State Board of Nursing) approved nurse aide 1 course only. Completion of this course must be followed by passing level 1 Certification Examination to become a certified nursing assistant in the state. Several colleges and nursing schools provide such courses.

Divided between 75 hours of classroom training and 75 hours of applied clinical exercises, this course includes at least 150 hours of training.

Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam

Excelling in level 1 certification exam is required to become a nurse aide in Oregon, once you complete your course. This test has two sections, namely a written test and clinical skills evaluation test.

Written Test

Consisting of 77 multiple choice questions, candidates are required to complete them within 90 minutes.

This test can be taken online or offline (paper test) in English language only; but results will be declared earlier in case of online test.

One can request to appear this test in oral format also. During the oral test, earphones will be provided, using which you will listen to a soundtrack of the test questions and answer them accordingly.

A printed copy of questions is also provided during the oral test. This test requires you to attain a passing score of 65% or more.

Skills Test

With 45 minutes provided to complete this test, candidates are asked to perform any 5 arbitrarily-selected skills under a proctor’s supervision.

Hand washing is one of the skills that is compulsorily asked to perform. Make sure you pass each skill with 80% or more accuracy. Failure in even a single skill will require you to retake this test (including all 5 skills)

Once you pass this exam, you will be listed on Oregon Nurse Aide Registry, giving you the license to work anywhere in any hospital, clinic, care center, old age home, rehabilitation center, etc..

On the other hand, if you fail in the exam, you will have two more chances to pass this state exam within 2-year validity phase.

You will require retesting either written or skills section, if you do not succeed in either one of them respectively in first/second attempt.

Make sure you pass in the third attempt, since failing in it will require you to retake the course with state certification exam.

After every 2 years, you must renew your license, for which you must have at least 400 hours of paid work experience in any licensed facility in the state within the last 2 years. Proving this thing will assure employment continuation in that state.

Oregon CNA Reciprocity

The facility for reciprocity to Oregon is provided. This requires collecting endorsement application form from OSBN site and submitting it along with meeting the following requirements:

  • Valid certificate from the state where he/she is currently under employment
  • Certificate of completion of a CNA course that meets OBRA requirements
  • At least 400 hours of paid work experience as a CNA in the last 24 months, performing nursing tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in that state
  • Clean criminal past

Verification is done once you submit the application form (along with the required documents).

After this, you will be notified about your transfer status. Requirements, once met will place you under the Nurse Aide Registry, providing you with the license to gain employment as a nurse aide in Oregon.
