Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam

Successful completion of a CNA course in New Jersey will allow you to sit for the certification exam. This exam requires you to appear for two sections, namely a written test section and clinical skills evaluation test section.

The former section costs around $53, while the latter one costs around $23.

You will be required to take the skills test first. In this test, you will be asked to perform any 5 arbitrarily-selected skills within an hour, which are assigned and supervised by a moderator.

While you perform these skills, your performance (applied clinical skills) in each skill will be rated. Your skills test score will be notified to you within 10 days.

Excelling in this test with a passing score of 80% (in each skill) is very important to sit for the written test because if you fail to do so, you will require retaking skills test before taking the written test.

Candidates are required to solve around 50-70 multiple choice questions within 90 minutes during the written test, which evaluates their all-round nursing-related understanding.

If you want to take this test in oral format, you can do so but make sure you specify it rightly in the examination application. Instead of English language, written/oral test can be taken in Spanish language too.

During the oral test, you are provided with earphones, where questions will be repeated twice; after listening to which, you will select the answer from the given choices. Passing score of 75% is required in written/oral test.

Make sure you pass in both these tests, as it will decide your results.

Retaking a CNA training program in New Jersey will be required, if you fail in either one of the tests (skills test or written test) in your third attempt.

Once you pass this exam, the Nurse Aide Registry will give you a license, through which you will get an opportunity to work as a nurse aide in hospitals, clinics, care centers, rehabilitation centers, etc., in the state.

Applying for license renewal in New Jersey will require you proving that you have worked for at least 7 hours as a nursing assistant in a licensed facility over the last 2 years.

A nurse aide renews his/her license after every 2 years to maintain its validity. In addition to this, criminal background check will be carried out. Renewal of the license in the state costs $30.
