Procedure for applying for State certification exam

A candidate is required to apply for and pass certification exam after completing his/her course to obtain a license. This exam requires one to go through a written test and clinical skills evaluation test. As the name suggests, written test evaluates the theoretical nursing knowledge of the candidates. This includes solving 60 questions in 90 minutes, out of which 10 questions are pretest questions, which are for collecting their statistical performance data. During the skills evaluation test, a candidate is asked to perform any five skills under a proctor’s supervision, who arbitrarily choose and assigns skills to them. This test assesses practical clinical-skills of the candidates. Passing both these tests is very essential from the results perspective. Once you pass this exam, you will get a license to start professional practice in any hospital, long-term care facility, clinic, rehabilitation center, etc., of Nevada. Regardless of whether you pass or fail in this exam, you can take this exam thrice only. Failing in the third attempt will require you to retake the certification exam along with a course.

Renewing a license is required to sustain your employment in that state. For renewing it in Nevada, make sure you prove that you have worked as a nurse aide for at least 40 hours for monetary compensation and have finished 24 hours of ongoing education over the last 2 years. If you are unable to meet these requirements, you will require undergoing a nurse assistant training program only for renewal.

If you are an out-of-state candidate and you wish to move to Nevada for working as a CNA, then you will have to file endorsement/transfer application form, which you can collect from the State Board of Nursing site. Following documents must be attached along with the application form:

  • Active CNA certificate copy highlighting the expiration date from the home state
  • Certificate highlighting excellence in an approved training program (must meet OBRA requirements)
  • W2-form (or paycheck stub/letter from employer) claiming that he/she has been employed as a CNA for at least 8 hours over the past 2 years
  • Exam results
  • Fingerprint cards (clean criminal background proof)with fee of $51.25

Once you submit these documents with application form, verification is made; after which, candidates are notified about their status. If you are able to meet these requirements, you will get a license, giving you the authority to gain nurse aide employment in the state.
