Procedure for Applying for State Certification Exam

To obtain a nurse aide license in Kentucky, it is very essential for the candidate to apply for certification exam after completing his/her course from the state.

This exam two sections, namely written test section and clinical skills evaluation test section.

During the written test, a candidate will be required to solve around 75 multiple choice questions ensuring at least 70% accuracy, i.e. scoring 52 or more.

This written test can also be taken verbally if he/she is not comfortable with written English; but it must be clearly mentioned in the application form before taking the test.

The clinical skills evaluation test engages the candidates in performing any 5 skills, randomly chosen and invigilated by the supervisor; thereby analyzing their performance in the assigned skills.

Once you successfully pass certification exam, you will get a nursing assistant/SRNA license from the Nurse Aide Registry, making you entitled to work anywhere as a SRNA in any clinic, hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center, or in any such associated place.

This license is valid for 2 years only, and must be renewed after every 2 years.

For applying for renewal, you will be asked to prove a minimum of 8 hours of employment as a nurse aide performing nursing related functions over that same period, and if you fail to prove this, then you will have to retake both the course and certification exam in to get a license once again.

Kentucky CNA Reciprocity

Transfer of an out-of-state license to Kentucky is easily achievable. All he/she will be required is to contact the state’s Nurse Aide Registry for reciprocity/transfer form and to prove the following points:

  • Active certificate (not lapsed) from the state where he/she is under employment at present
  • Good standing position with that state
  • Clean criminal background

Once these and associated documents are verified, a notification will be made about the candidate’s status for the transfer by the Nurse Aide Registry.
