Procedure for applying for State certification exam

This exam (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam) can be appeared only after the completion of a CNA course in South Carolina. Consisting of two sections, namely a written test and skills evaluation test, the former one focuses on examining the conceptual nursing knowledge whereas the latter one deals with testing the applied clinical skills of the candidates. During the written test, candidates are required to solve 70 multiple choice questions within 2 hours. Taking this test orally (in English or Spanish language) is possible provided you mention it in the examination application form. The two parts that this oral test includes are 60 multiple choice questions and 10 word-recognition (multiple choice) questions. Candidates are provided with earphones in this test. Each question is repeated once, listening to which you will choose the answer from the given options, marking it. Irrespective of any language (whether English or Spanish), candidates are meant to take the word-recognition section of this test in English only, as it tests their nursing expressions. Each word in this section is repeated twice, thereafter asking them to match the answer and mark it. During skills test, any 5 skills are randomly selected and assigned by a proctor, which the candidates are required to perform under his/her supervision. Candidate’s performance is evaluated in each skill. It is necessary to do well in each skill, as you will be declared fail, if you do not succeed even in a single skill task. Make certain that you excel in both the sections of this exam. You will be listed on South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry if you pass this exam. This will provide you with an opportunity to make a CNA career in South Carolina. One can apply for this exam only thrice within the 2-year eligibility period. Failing in one of the sections of the exam in first/second try will need you to retest that section only. Try not to fail in the third attempt, as it will result in retaking the course and state certification in South Carolina.

Renewal in South Carolina requires one to have a minimum of 8 hours of paid work experience as a certified nursing assistant, performing nursing duties in an authorized facility in South Carolina over the past 2 years. After every 2 years, the South Carolina CNA license must be renewed as it ensures employment extension in that state sustaining your experience.

An out-of-state candidate desiring to work in the state of South Carolina will be required to obtain a reciprocity application form from South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry. Proving the following things is extremely important for transfer:

  • Active certificate from the state where he/she currently works
  • Good standing status with that state
  • Completion of a CNA course claiming that the course included at least 80 hours of training and meets OBRA requirements
  • Clean criminal history

Documents related to it and application form will be verified, after which notification will be made claiming your transfer status. Fulfilling all the requirements will provide you with a license to attain employment as a Certified Nurse Aide in South Carolina State.
