Procedure for applying for State certification exam

You can apply immediately for certification exam, once you complete your course in Montana. Make sure you complete all the skills on the checklist (known as Nurse Aide Skills Competency Check List while pursuing your course, as its successful completion will make you eligible to sit for the above specified examination. This exam includes two sections: written test and clinical skills evaluation test. Written test requires students to solve 70 multiple choice questions, which tests the conceptual nursing understanding of the students. Skills evaluation test requires students to perform well in any 5 skills (from a set of 25 skills), randomly selected, assigned and supervised by a proctor. It is very important for the students to pass the written test with at least 75% accuracy and skills evaluation test with at least 80% accuracy, as this will enable them to achieve Montana CNA license. Once you excel in this exam, you will be registered under the state’s Nurse Aide Registry; thus giving you the license to work anywhere as a nurse aide in any long-term care facility, clinic, hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation center, etc.. If by any chance, you fail in the first attempt in this exam, you can appear this exam twice more (this means, altogether thrice). You will have to retake either written test or skills test only, if you fail in either one of them. Retaking the course as well as certification exam will be required, if you do not pass in the third attempt.

To continue working as a CNA in Montana, it is very essential to renew your license after every 2 years. For this, you will require to prove your employment status assuring that you have worked for at least 8 hours as a nurse aide, performing nursing-related work over the past 2 years. No fee is required for renewal. After verifying the documents ensuring fulfillment of the requirements, your CNA license will be renewed.

Transfer of an out-of-state nurse aide to this state requires him/her filling and submitting Interstate endorsement/reciprocity form, which can be collected from the the Nurse Aide Registry site. In addition to the application form, a candidate will have to prove the following details:

  • Active nurse aide certificate (not lapsed/expired) from the state where he/she is presently under employment
  • Good standing status with that state
  • Clean criminal background

It requires at most 15 days for processing from the date on which completed application is received. This process is free of cost. Candidates will be informed about their reciprocity status after the verification of the documents. If you satisfactorily meet all the requirements, you will get a license in Montana, using which you can gain employment at any place in the state.
