In the state of Connecticut, CNAs are formally termed as “Certified Nursing Aides,” instead of certified nursing assistants. There is a vast scope for the aspirants in the health sector in the state. Pursuing Certified Nursing Assistant from the state is relatively much easier as there are 155 recognized courses provided in Connecticut. Several community colleges, vocational colleges, & independent facilities conduct such courses. All these programs are approved by Connecticut Department of Health. It will require an applicant to complete a minimum of 100 hour training, which consists of 50-hour minimum classroom training exercises & the remaining ones for clinical exercises.

Clinical exercises include training the applicants in 25 skill areas; out of which 5 skills will be tested in the skills exam section during certification exam. The CNA courses in Connecticut cost around $900, but it may vary. These course programs typically comprises studying basic nursing ethics, proper patient care, hygiene & nutrition, CPR certification, infection prevention & control measures, basic medical methodology, and performing other related nursing duties. Many institutions/companies in the state offer free training to the candidates who have signed on to work with them for a pre-specified amount of time.

Procedure for applying for State certification exam

Once you are done with the CNA course in Connecticut, you can directly apply for certification exam. This exam includes two sections, namely written section & skills section. Clearing both these exams is very important, as this will allow an applicant to work in Connecticut. During the skills exam, your performance will be tested in any 5 skills. If you pass this skills test, you will be required to undergo a series of multiple choice questions covering much of the classroom training exercises in the written exam. Your result will be determined based on your performance in both these exams. Once you successfully pass this test, you will get registered under the state Nurse Aide Registry. This registered license will provide the applicants with an opportunity to work in the state in long-term care facilities, local hospitals, rehab centers, & other such health related institutions. This license must be renewed after every two years.

If an applicant has attained a license from some state other than Connecticut & if he/she wants to shift to the state for employment, he/she will be needed to contact the Nurse Aide Registry for the reciprocity form. They will be asked for a valid certification from an approved college & good employment track record. Candidates will be informed regarding, whether they are eligible for the transfer or not after the submission of these & other necessary documents. This will also include fingerprints & background assessment.
