How to be a Self Employed Nurse & Travel the World

If you have been following our blog, you know that I have covered two different options for nurses that want to travel as part of their job:

But, what if you don’t have the qualifications to be a Nurse Educator or a Nurse Researcher?

Or, do you wish to be self employed and move away from the role of a bedside nurse? There is another opportunity for nurses that want to have a mobile lifestyle and focus on travel.

Being self-employed as a Nurse Writer provides the opportunity and flexibility of your work schedule to travel the world.

As with the other two options, a career in nurse writing is not for everyone. Some people do not enjoy writing or need a more physically active job. Self-discipline and organization are skills that are required for this career.

However, nurses that wish to pursue writing are often lured by the fact that it can be done from anywhere in the world, and allows them to schedule their work around living their life.

This option has the potential for more personal freedom when compared to the other two options. Freelance writing can be done at any time of the day or night as long as you meet your submission deadline.

Also, a traditional career as a travel nurse requires you to quit your present job or take a leave of absence (if you are not self-employed).

However, a career as a Nurse Writer enables you to transition yourself slowly into a new specialty while keeping your full-time nursing job. A slow transition into a new career would allow you to position other areas of your life to prepare for a travel lifestyle.

Being self-employed with a writer’s lifestyle is a dream for many people. But, a nursing background can make it easier for nurses to pursue this career than some other professions.

While some nurses have previous writing experience, others do not and are wondering how they can get started in this career. You can take traditional English college classes to learn how to write. However, you will not learn the career aspects of becoming a Nurse Writer.

I am teaming up with Alicia-joy Pierre, RN to let you guys know about her course The Nurse Web Writer Program. She is offering a 1-hour free training session. Here are a few pertinent details from her website…

“Here’s what you will learn about the training:

  • 5 different ways that nurses can write for websites and web courses and EARN INCOME from it. I have done ALL FIVE of these.
  • How to get started
  • Which writing gigs are right for you?
  • What to do if you think your grammar/writing style/etc is not up to par (there are MANY options for you…do not let that stop you)

Training date: Wednesday, July 24th at 7 pm EST. It will be recorded for those who cannot attend live. But you must register.

Training location: Your comfy chair at home (it’s online).

While you are registering for your free training, be sure to check out some of her podcasts.
